Irene, her sister Dorothy and some of their best friends formed the Jollyaires Club during high school. The Jollyaires met monthly to go to Broadway shows or share coffee and cake at the homes of members. Irene married William Emmerich, Sr., in Bloomfield on July 4, 1947. She worked as a bookkeeper for Eastwood Neally Company in Belleville, New Jersey until her first child was born. They lived in Bloomfield until Bill’s retirement, when they moved to Toms River, New Jersey. In Toms River, they enjoyed spending time with family. They became members of the Beachwood Old Guard Glee Club. Irene was an avid reader who enjoyed camping. She was a lifelong New York Yankees baseball fan. Irene moved to Spring Hill, Kansas to be near family 22 years ago and was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Gardner, Kansas. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Our family get togethers in Bloomfield and Toms River we’re always a time of fun, laughter, great home cooked food and conversation. We could stop in to visit anytime and Aunt Irene and Uncle Bill would welcome us with open arms. Aunt Irene would always put on the coffee pot and in no time she would set the table and prepare a meal. Food just magically appeared any time of day or night. We would sit and visit for hours, left with full bellies and smiles.

I remember Aunt Irene’s love to walk. She did not drive but it did not stop her from shopping and running errands. I love the memory of her pushing Patty in the stroller down Mill Street in Bloomfield to the library. I loved walking with her and she would joyfully take all of us kids with her down Washington Street into Toms River.

I will always remember Aunt Irene’s great smile, her kindness and her love for family and friends.

Ginger Doyle (Irene’s niece)
