Bill Cunningham, 79, of Olathe, KS was called to God’s heavenly home on March 28, 2019 after a long illness of heart disease and complications. Visitation 7:00 to 8:30 Wed., April 3, 2019 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. Funeral service 9:00 am Thurs., April 4, 2019 at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 306 E. Madison, Gardner, KS. Burial with military honors follows at 12:30 pm at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Memorials may be given in memory of Bill Cunningham to King of Kings Lutheran Church, Gardner, KS. Condolences may be left at

Bill was born March 27, 1940 in Omaha, NE to William Francis and Irene Mae (Smith) Cunningham. He was the eldest of four children. In his young years, Bill lived on a farm near Springfield, NE. Later the family moved to Omaha. Bill graduated from South High School in Omaha, NE in 1957. In 1959, Bill proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Bill spent 18 months at Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines. The rest of his four year stint was at Camp Pendleton in Ocean Side, CA. Upon his discharge in 1963, Bill moved back to Omaha and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years.

Bill was united in marriage to Marian L. Scholting on April 25, 1964. God blessed the marriage with two beautiful children: Allen Lee Cunningham and Patricia Ann Cunningham. Bill was a very hard working, modest man; he did not like being in the spotlight. Bill was a great husband, father and grandfather. Bill always enjoyed special times with the grandkids; his favorite name was “grandpa.” One of the best memories with the grandkids was going on canoe trips. Besides spending time with family and friends, Bill enjoyed baseball, football, auto racing, golf and fishing. He enjoyed God’s beauty in the serene and solitude of nature, especially when visiting State and Federal Parks. Bill became a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church after moving to Kansas. Bill will be missed by his loved ones, but we will all “meet again in heaven.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Marion Zyblut and sister, Barbra Ross. Bill is survived by his wife, Marian; son, Allen (Linda) Cunningham, Birmingham, AL; daughter, Patricia Evans, Overland Park, KS; grandchildren: Trent and Blake Cunningham, Birmingham, AL, Emily, Lauren and Charley Evans, Overland Park, KS; brothers: Harvey (Donna) Cunningham, Omaha, NE, Larry (Linda) Cunningham, Olathe, KS and several nephews and nieces.

I remember “Bill” as a no nonsense hardworking country boy. What you saw was what you got. We were “double first cousins” & attended Omaha South together. Being a city boy, he never let me forget the time I wanted to “collect “ the eggs while on a w/e stay at the farm! So glad we got to see Bill & other long lost relatives at my Mothers (Ruth Cunningham) funeral service. Godspeed Bill. Ray & Margaret, Kevin, Kristin & Kerry Cunningham.
